Carole Fishback
“I remember the pungent smells of my mother's oils, coffee cans filled with battered brushes and big canvases drying in the kitchen.” This is Carole Fishback's recollection of her first exposure to art as a child, and admits such memories and the associated desire to recreate a similar atmosphere of creativity remain with her each time she sets out to paint. Carole's earliest desires to draw on everything, including her earliest gradeschool homework, evolved into a lifetime of exploring media, subject matter, and inspirational settings in New Mexico, Arizona, California, Iowa, France and Italy.
An insurance job transfer to San Francisco in 1989 and a trip to Italy a few years later, set the stage for Carole to expand her art and photography interests. Initially, she did this by obtaining an Associates of Arts degree from Skyline Community College in Northern California while working full-time. This was followed by numerous workshops throughout the state, entering competitions, and traveling to Provence , France where she joined other artists in the exploration of “pleine aire” painting. Such pursuits ultimately lead to commissioned works for clients ranging from co-workers and businesses to sportscaster John Madden. Seeking to slow down and regain more time to devote to her young daughter while continuing to explore artmaking, she relocated to the Midwest in late 1999. In Iowa , she has continued to produce commissioned work, murals, and to teach art privately to young children. In addition, she went on to exhibit her work in the Iowa State Fair in 2002; had her first solo exhibition and in that same year, was featured in “The Madisonian” as the new local artist in Winterset , IA. “Having an art showing of my own gave me the opportunity to see first hand, the impact I could have - not only on a community and the bond it created with people, but also upon my daughter as the artist my own mother was in my eyes when I was her age.” A short time later, Carole was invited to have another solo exhibition in the Antique Auto Showroom of Mitchell's Transmission in West Des Moines , IA. She is now exploring art in a Bachelor of Arts Program within the Art Department at the University of Northern Iowa . In addition, she is furthering her writing studies for her minor degree. Carole anticipates completing her degree in June 2006 , but, in the interim, continues to enjoy freelance work from her studio in Waterloo , Iowa - often with her daughter now painting at her side.
